Ceramic Education and Activity

Much of my work focuses on hand-built abstract figurative work and decorative functional pieces. I delight in the effects from atmospheric firings such as Raku, wood and salt. Firings. For about 20 years I have studied at the Clay Art Center(CAC) in Port Chester NY as well at Peter's Valley NJ, Maple Crest NY and Greenwich House NY. At CAC, I exhibited in the 2010 Wood Fired show (Henry's Space) as well as several Rising Stars student shows. In 2008, I traveled to China and exhibited in the International Ceramic Exposition in Jingdezhen. In 2013 I was part of a group show in Hastings-on-Hudson: "A Teacher's journey." More recently my work was in a group show at The Blue Door, Yonkers NY.

Past Creative Activities

My past creative activities have ranged from dance (modern, ballet, folk) to music and visual arts. Dancing as a child, I studied dance seriously in college and professionally in New York City. Once I decided to go to medical school I had neither the time nor energy to continue dancing. During the past 10 years, I have returned to dance and movement classes for pleasure. These days I find my ceramic work is imbued with my love of dance and movement. Music has always been part of my life, playing oboe and clarinet as a child and singing in choral groups as an adult. Today I find musicality in my ceramic creations. Years ago I discovered that one needed a good eye but not drawing skills for photography and I still pursue photo images that capture my eye. I have explored other media, including water colors, drawing, glass blowing and textiles.

Personal/Professional

I am a retired physician, board certified in both Internal Medicine and Occupational and Preventive Medicine with a Masters of Public Health in Epidemiology (study of disease in populations). My experience in workplace health and safety took place in business (Time Inc, IBM), government (NJ Health Dept) and academics (Cornell, Mt Sinai). I edited two books on workplace violence.

Recently I relocated from living on City Island to a New York City apartment overlooking the Hudson River. Since Covid I am engaged in multiple zooms including yoga, book discussions and Quakers. Fortunately I am able to get out for bird watching in Central Park and walking my dog Iris. I am looking forward to when I can return to travel, sailing, dining out with friends and attending NYC concerts and theater.

My adult daughter lives on the Big Island of Hawai`i where she supports nonprofits and regenerative organizations to have solid financial foundations. She also is an aquatic therapist and is part of a halau that regularly performs traditional Hula dances.
